FPL Vibes – UEFA Champions League Fantasy Preview

The UEFA Champions League (UCL) kicks off tomorrow on Tuesday 12th September, 2017 as the continent’s best teams take part in Europe’s elite competition.

For seasoned Fantasy League managers like myself, the UCL Fantasy League game provides a welcome respite from the weekly shenanigans of the EPL, and a chance to manage Europe’s marquee players.

Here are a few key factors that make UCL Fantasy such a great draw:

  • Vast Player Pool – With 32 teams split into 8 groups, you have access to a virtual megastore of players to construct your Champions League team. This also lends for less “template” teams and more unique teams in your mini leagues.

  • Goals Galore – With Europe’s elite “Pot 1” teams often grouped alongside “Pot 4” continental minnows, the Champions League throws up many more uneven and high scoring games than the ultra-competitive EPL – which equals massive points on the table for opportunist managers with a keen eye.

  • Diamonds in the Rough – The intense coverage of EPL Fantasy by a plethora of online sources means there are few secrets. But with some rudimentary research, the Champions League can unearth some undiscovered talent. Nothing can beat the feeling of a 2 goal salvo from your 5.5m midfielder from the unknown Danish champs.

  • Manager Substitutions – The UCL Fantasy League games allows managers to make substitutions and captaincy changes within the same matchday. Once Tuesday’s games are completed, you can swap underperforming stars for players on your bench that are set to play on Wednesday. This is great because you don’t have to gasp in agony at major points stuck on your bench and you get two bites at the captaincy cherry.

  • Superstars – Cristiano Ronaldo. Lionel Messi. Neymar. Robert Lewandowski. All available for a premium price, but you actually get to play with these guys. Does more need to be said here?

So what are you waiting on? Register and sign up your team now at http://uclfantasy.uefa.com/en/fantasy17 .

FPL Vibes Prize League Roundup – May

Can you believe it folks? The nine months of thrills and spills have come to an end. Manchester City has won their second BPL title in three years and the corresponding FPL season has been exciting and very eventful. Some would be disappointed with their showing while others may be very chuffed and already planning strategies for next year.

Today we salute our May prize winner, Andrew Boissiere with his team GOLDEN EYES. Andrew tallied the same 163 points as Christian Gittens with his team gitzn11 but prevailed on a tiebreaker by making less transfers for the month. For his choice of jersey, Andrew has selected a Netherlands Home Kit from our official kit supplier Red Mango Kits.  It was only a two gameweek month but Andrew was rewarded for finishing strongly. Let us take an in depth look at Andrew’s final push.

The last double gameweek 37 of the season was disappointing for many managers but not so for ‘GOLDEN EYES’. Andrew amassed an incredible 102 points with captain Dzeko leading the way with 50 points. Other leading lights included Zabaleta(12), Mertesacker(8) and Hart(7). I hope Andrew ‘raised his bat’ for this peerless century!

In preparation for GW38 Andrew sold Lallana and Mertesacker and bought Ward and Gerrard. He totalled 61 points on this occasion with Gerrard(11),Ramsey(10) and Zabaleta(9) being the star performers for ‘GOLDEN EYES’. What is remarkable about Andrew’s feat is that he landed the monthly prize without the fantasy giant, Yaya Toure. Zabaleta and Dzeko proved to be the key men for Andrew in his push to the May monarchy just as they were key for coach Manuel Pellegrini in the club’s push for the BPL title.

Congratulations to Andrew as well as all other monthly winning managers in FPL Vibes for their sterling efforts this season.  The FPL managers in this league have exhibited tactical acumen of the highest order and in my opinion winning prizes gets harder with each passing year. Look out for a coming article which wraps up the league and recognizes the top 5 managers in the overall standings.

We anxiously await the 2014 World Cup which will keep the football vibes bubbling till August 17th when we do it all over again.

I must end by asking all managers..

Did you feel the vibes?

International Break Roundup Part 2 – Travel and Fatigue

Here is a round up of  some Fantasy League players who may have been affected by the just concluded international break.

TRAVEL WOES

Uruguay’s World Cup playoff match against Jordan on Wednesday evening meant that Luis Suarez would have flown over 17,000 miles during the international break. Despite his reputation for being able to overcome jet lag, Liverpool are taking no chances and have hired a private jet to get the player back to Anfield as soon as possible.

Similarly, Spain’s players jetted off to Johannesburgh, South Africa on Tuesday for a friendly international that featured the likes of Alvaro Negredo, Jesus Navas, Santi Cazorla, Nacho Monreal and Juan Mata.

Argentina’s friendly match versus Bosnia-Herzegovenia was held comparatively closer to home in Miami and featured the likes of Sergio Aguero, Pablo Zabaleta and Erik Lamela.

Staying even closer to home was Brazil who tackled Chile in Toronto with the likes of Oscar, David Luiz, Paulinho, Ramires and Willian among their contingent.

FATIGUE

Several players participated in gruelling back to back knockout games over the international break.

France’s crucial and taxing double header against Ukraine featured performances from the likes of Hugo Lloris, Patrice Evra, Mathieu Debuchy, Mamadou Sakho and Yohan Cabaye. There were also shorter appearances by Bacary Sagna and Olivier Giroud.

Portugal’s playoff game against Sweden featured exertions over the two legs by the likes of Martin Olsson, Sebastien Larsson, Alexander Kacaniklic and Johan Elmander for Sweden. For Portugal, Nani was the lone EPL player that featured.

Further afield, Samuel Eto’o, Benoit Assou Ekotto, Papiss Cisse, Yaya Toure, Kolo Toure and Jon Obi Mikel all featured for their respective teams in World Cup playoffs in Africa.

International Break Roundup Part 1 – Who’s injured??

The seemingly long international break is over my fellow fantasy managers and coming out of this EPL break  a lot of attention will be focused on who is fit or not for Gameweek 12 action. Can we safely buy a new player? Do we stick or twist on transferring out an injured player in our squads? These are the questions being asked right now. To add some clarity to the situation we will now take a look at the key players and their status for the coming Gameweek. Let us also take into account that as we speak the last World cup qualifier is taking place between Uruguay and Jordan and one of our fantasy favourites, Liverpool forward Luis Suarez is in the starting lineup.

WHO’S FIT?

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey was rested from Wales friendly against Finland due to a tight hamstring but has been passed fit for the clash against Southampton. More good news for Arsenal has arrived as Theo Walcott is training once more and available for this weekend.Aston Villa are nervously awaiting the return of talismanic striker Christian Benteke from international duty. The Belgian striker missed training on Sunday and didn’t feature in Tuesday’s defeat to Japan because of a knee injury. Reports suggest it was only a  precautionary move and that he should be fit for Villa’s clash with West Brom on Monday.

WHO’S DOUBTFUL

Manchester United and Chelsea are both sweating on the fitness of defensive players going into the matches this weekend following injuries on England duty. Phil Jones limped out of England’s defeat to Chile on Friday evening with a groin problem and is a doubt for the trip to Cardiff on Sunday. Ashley Cole suffered a recurrence of his recent rib injury during the loss to Germany on Tuesday night, making him a serious doubt for the London derby with West Ham at the weekend.
Holding midfielder/defender Jones joins Michael Carrick and Maourane Fellaini on the sidelines for David Moyes’ men, meaning Ryan Giggs could be one to watch for fantasy managers this weekend. The Welshman has started just two games this season so far but could be in line for a third at the weekend due to the injury absentees. Promising youngster Ryan Bertrand could make a rare appearance for Jose Mourinho’s men should Cole fail to make the clash at Upton Park on Saturday evening.

Thankfully for us FPL managers the next international break is in March 2014, definitely far enough to allow us to focus solely on planning for the league action and relieving the anxious injury watch over the regular two week international schedule of games.

It would be wise to check until the very last minute for more injury news as the heavy Christmas schedule is soon upon us. Every extra transfer made or not made is even more important.

Enjoy the vibes!

LOOKING FOR A MID ? – IMPORTANT STATS TO CONSIDER

We are smack dab in the middle of another international break again folks. Yes, I know many groan about the boredom and the lack of league football but its also a good time to reflect and plan ahead. Taking a look at some of the EPL stars involved in the internationals also would not hurt but we at FPL Vibes will now do our part to assist and present a sample of midfielders to consider for your side and how their stats match up.

Most FPL managers have settled on their forward line or at least the best options are obvious so that a switch can be made. The midfield options this year so far have not been as clear cut for the simple reason that the big name ‘heavy hitters’ such as Silva and Hazard have not set the world alight. In addition to this, the returns from midfield have not been as high as previous years up to this point. Some budget options have presented themselves such as Ross Barkley, Aaron Ramsey and Robbie Brady. They have outperformed higher priced options and made it easier for FPL managers to spend more on forwards and defenders. We are going to present midfielders’ performance under the five key categories of goals, assists, passes received in the final third, shot accuracy and chances created.  Some of the high performers will be highlighted along with those who have that potential to score well going forward.

MIDFIELDERS Goals Assists Passes received in final third Shot accuracy (%) Chances created Games played
Ross Barkley(Everton) 2 0 116 26.3 8 7
Robbie Brady(Hull City) 3 1 59 37.5 9 6
Aaron Ramsey(Arsenal) 4 2 103 43.8 8 7
Mesut Ozil(Arsenal) 0 3 95 80 16 4
Yaya Toure(Manchester City) 4 1 109 46.2 9 7
Oscar(Chelsea) 3 0 215 35.3 10 6
Sigurdsson(Tottenham) 3 0 85 53.3 7 6
Lallana(Southampton) 1 2 119 25 13 7
Michu(Swansea) 2 1 94 40.9 16 7
Whittingham(Cardiff) 1 2 103 20 12 7
Hazard(Chelsea) 1 0 131 35.7 14 7
Silva(Manchester City) 1 2 111 50 14 4

The categories selected above highlight the players’ potential to score and create. There are some very revealing stats here which can guide your decisions as some teams have favourable fixtures on the horizon. The upcoming fixture list in addition to this snapshot of players’ form should be a decent gauge for now but we know how quickly things change in the world of football and FPL.

Good luck my fellow managers. May we chose our mids wisely!!
